Milam County Republicans will essentially choose winners in county-wide sheriff and prosecutor races on Tuesday.
Actually many have already voted. Early voting ends Friday with 1,602 ballots cast through Tuesday in the GOP races.
In addition to the county-wide races there are three precinct level positions to be filled in the Republican Primary.
DEMOCRATS—Milam Democrats don’t have any county-level races to decide—there is one unopposed candidate— but will pick between candidates in ‘Super Tuesday’s’ red-hot presidential primary.
A total of 283 Democrats had voted early through Tuesday.
COUNTY—Incumbent Chris White has drawn challengers in Craig Wise and Herbie Vaughan.
Prosecutor Bill Torrey is opposed for a new term by Lonnie Gosch.
There’s a three-man contest for Precinct 3 Constable to fill the position being vacated by John Fisher.
Candidates are Art Neal, Frank Summers and Charles Truitt.
Incumbent Richard “Opey” Watkins, Henry Hubnik and Ricky McCall are vying for the Precinct 1 commissioner post.
And there’s a contested chase for Precinct 1 Constable between Pat Guffey and James Pratt.
All those races are Republicans who will not have a Democratic opponent in the general election.
NOVEMBER—There will be a contested countywide race in the fall however.
Incumbent Precinct 4 constable Michael Moehling is unopposed in the Republican Primary and Sam Pickett does not have an opponent in the Democratic Primary.
UNOPPOSED—Current Milam office holders, all Republicans—unopposed for re-election are:
• John Youngblood, 20th District Court Judge.
• Sherry Mueck, Milam County Tax Assessor-Collector.
• Jay Beathard, Precinct 3 Constable.
• Charlie West, Precinct 2 Constable.
None face Democratic opponents in the fall.
CHAIRS—Bill Whitmire is unopposed for Republican County Chair and Barbara Holly is unopposed for Democratic Party Chair.
MORE—There’s a lot more than Milam County races on the ballot, of course. This is a presidential election year and the two parties have a total of 24 candidates on the primary ballots vying for the office now held by Republican Donald Trump.
Trump is challenged by six candidates, including former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld, and Milam Republicans also have the option of voting “uncommitted.”
There are 17 Democrats hoping to be the nominee including all the perceived front-runners. The ballot includes former Vice President Joe Biden, Senators Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Amy Klobuchar, and former Mayors Pete Buttigieg and Michael Bloomberg.
SENATE, MORE— Incumbent U. S. Senator John Cornyn has four opponents on the GOP ballot.
There are 12 Democrats seeking that office.
It’s a crowded field for U. S. Representative District 17 where incumbent Republican Bill Flores is retiring.
Twelve Republicans and three Democrats are hoping to succeed him.
There’s already a November contest for State Representative District 5.
Incumbent Republican Terry Wilson will face Democrat Jessica Tiedt in November. They are the only candidates on their respective party ballots.
There’s no Texas Senate race in 2020. Texas senators serve four-year terms and Republican Charles Schwertner was re-elected in 2018.
