It’s hard for me to wrap my mind around Jesus. What I’m saying is He is a real dude—God incarnate, which means He is God with skin on His bones. Is it just me or does it amaze you?

In John 2 we read about His first miracle. He was invited to a wedding along with His crew. While they are at the wedding reception they run out of wine. Since there was no wine and cheese shop to make a quick run to, Jesus’ mother says, “Son, do something!” He replies to His momma, “This ain’t got nothing to do with Me.” Then His mother tells the caterers in verse 5 to, “Do whatever He tells you.” That’s still good counsel today, isn’t it? Mary went for the fence with that statement, let me share it again because we should still be doing what she said, “Whatever Jesus tells us to do we should be doing it.” Amen!

After this brief dialogue Jesus takes 180 gallons of water and turns it into wine. That’s over 907 bottles of wine. Wow! This must have been some party. Here’s the deal: this was not the cheap stuff that might be served late in the evening after everyone has had a few too many. Jesus brings the best wine to the wedding. In verse 10 it says, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.”

This is what I mean when I struggle to understand Jesus. He doesn’t just come to the wedding but He brings the very best. Is this your perspective? When you pray, when you ask God for something in your life do you anticipate God to bring the best into your life? My disclaimer is we have to let God define “best.” Best might include some suffering and some pain. We tend to be impatient; we want what we want and we want it now.

Life is hard, it’s why it’s called a narrow road because few find it. I think the exit off the narrow road that leads to the broad road of destruction is backed up like an Oklahoma turnpike toll booth. In other words, a lot of people want Jesus but they don’t want to follow Him all the way, do the things He tells us to do that will eventually lead to the “good wine.”

I’m frustrated. Do you ever get frustrated in your faith? What does God want from me and for me right now? Where’s the good wine? Sometimes the heavens are like iron when we pray. Typically this means wait. Psalm 27:14 tells us, “Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.” 2nd Peter 3:9 is a chaser to that, “The Lord is not slow in keeping His promises, as some understand slowness.”

I know we don’t see “waiting” as something, but it is very much something. But while we wait we need to be busy doing what Momma Mary said, “Do whatever He tells you.”

He told me to tell you that.

May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed. Psalm 20:4
