Rober t Whitmore’s memorial service was held here on Saturday with a procession of over 30 fire trucks from all over Texas, just as was done for his father, Earl Whitmore, five years earlier. Robert died on Aug. 16 and his father on Aug. 22, 2017, just seven days apart.

Robert was born on Nov. 6, 1962, in Gatesville to Earl and Dixie (Whisenant) Whitmore. He and Cynthia Davenport were married on May 11, 1985. Robert was a 1981 graduate of Rockdale high School and also attended TSTC, ACC Fire Academy and Temple College.

He was a retired firefighter/ EMT for the City of Taylor and the City of Hutto, where he served the cities for 23 years.

After his retirement he worked as a security guard for Alcoa for three years, and for Texas Propane for four years.

He was a member of the Black Jack Baptist Church and served as a deacon.

He was a member of the Milano Volunteer Fire Department and a former member of the Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department. He loved to find and take photos of fire trucks, tractors and barns.

Robert’s father, Earl, came to Rockdale in 1970, joined the fire department, was chief for almost 10 years in the 1980s and 1990s and continued to serve the city in various ways even as his health failed.

For 30 years he was CPR instructor for the American Heart Association and was given an appreciation award by the Rockdale ISD for his volunteer service in training school personnel over the decades.

Memorials for Robert Whitmore can be made to the Milano Volunteer Fire Department or to the Black Jack Baptist Church.
