Rockdale City Manager Chris Whittaker is heading to the coast.
Well, almost to the coast. Whittaker told The Reporter Tuesday he has accepted the position of interim city manager for that Brazoria County city of about 20,000.
“My last day in Rockdale will be March 13,” he said. “I will be in Angleton on Monday, March 16.”
Development Services Director Barbara Holly is serving in an interim capacity until the council chooses a permanent replacement
SEARCHING—Whittaker has been searching for another position since at least last October when he confirmed that he was one of six finalists for a vacant city manager position in Kingsville in South Texas.
Whittaker became Rockdale City Manager in December, 2014. He said it is expected he will become permanent city manager in Angleton.
Whittaker is also a director of the Post Oak Savannah Groundwater Conservation District (POSGCD) and submitted a letter of resignation to that board on Tuesday.
“I have told Barbara that I will available for assistance during this three-week transition period,” Whittaker said.
“I have been happy to serve the city and the businesses of Rockdale,” he said. “I feel like we have accomplished a lot in developing a quality of place and I’m very grateful for the support I received.”
Whittaker is a 25-year veteran of the United States Army and was a frequent speaker at Memorial Day and other military-themed occasions.
Angleton City Manager Scott Albert resigned earlier this month after a 2-1/2-hour executive session. The council had called the meeting to “discuss his future.”
The council designated Mayor Jason Perez to appoint an interim manager.
