A Taylor woman died early Tuesday morning in a traffic accident southwest of Gause after being struck by a semitruck on the shoulder of US 79.

Stephanie Louisa Torres-Herrera, 29, was looking for something in the trunk of a disabled car that was being worked on when the accident happened, a spokesman for the Department of Public Safety said.

The car was being jump started by a pickup and both vehicles were on the shoulder of the highway.

DPS said there was a heavy fog limiting the visibility that morning when the semitruck pulling a trailer drifted onto the shoulder of road where Torres-Herrera was standing.

Milam County Justice of the Peace Gary Northcott pronounced the woman, who had been a passenger in the pickup, dead after the accident that happened around 5:30 a.m., 2.6 miles southwest of Gause.

The investigation into the accident is ongoing, the DPS said.
