Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 11 a.m., the Texas Historical Foundation Director Judy Davis visited Rockdale to tour The 1895 and hosted a presentation of the 2022 THF Michael Duda Architectural Grant awarded to Vision Historic Preservation Foundation. The grant is contributing to the restoration of the iconic bell tower.
Bell tower steel framing construction is scheduled to begin at the end of the month, with reconstructive masonry work and bell tower window installation scheduled in first quarter of 2023.
Phase One of the project includes complete restoration of the South Facade, including the reconstruction of the bell tower and cupola spires, restoration of original architectural details, installation of historically accurate window and door reproductions.
Bell Tower engineering and reconstruction are being funded by an in-kind donation resulting in approximately a $350,000 reduction in project expenses. Architectural and engineering design plans were funded by private donations and in part by a grant from the National Trust.
Production of Phase One windows and doors was funded by a Historic Preservation Grant from the City of Rockdale's Hotel Occupancy Tax Fund. Finish carpentry to restore the decorative trim around the south doors will be funded in part by a Historic Preservation Grant from the Milam County Historical Commission.
Vision Historic Preservation Foundation's grant writing and fundraising efforts continue in 2023. The public's support is key to the success of this restoration and revitalization project.
