It has taken the City of Rockdale a while to get all the legal details finished, but at long last the massive cast iron water pipe replacement project began in earnest on Monday. The map above shows which lines will be involved in Phase One of the project which is where most of the cast iron pipes are located. Phase Two will involve the rest of the city.
As work is being done on the lines, please be patient as water service interruptions, cloudy or dirty water and traffic disruptions will take place. But as most Rockdalians agree, the necessary interruptions will be worth it to have non-rusty water, which has long been a problem. The current city administration is finally fixing the issue and the whole city owes them a debt of gratitude for finally undertaking this huge project.
The first line to be replaced, line six, runs along north Ackerman. The work began Monday and will continue through Jan. 13 of next year. The city hopes to save money by leaving the pipes in the ground and replacing them with PVC piping.
Parts of some yards will be dug up during the process in the city’s right of way.
Here is a schedule of when and where the remaining work will be done which was released by the city last week: Line 3, Jan. 14-25, 2024; Line 2, Jan. 26-Feb. 6, 2024; Line 1, Feb. 7-March 17, 2024; Line 4, March 18-26, 2024; Line 5, March 27-April 1, 2024.
Also, Line 11: April 2-7, 2024; Line 10, April 8-13, 2024; Line 7, April 14-21, 2024; Line 8, April 22-May 12, 2024; Line 9, May 13-June 21, 2024.
