The women of Slovenia have written this year’s service for the annual World Day of Prayer.
First Presbyterian Church of Rockdale will host this year’s service on Friday at 11 a.m. The church is located at 1600 Alcoa and the service will be in the Fellowship Hall followed by a light lunch reflecting Slovenians tastes.
This worldwide, women-led movement held the first Friday of March each year will reflect the culture of Slovenia.
Slovenia is a small South Central European country, formerly Yugoslavia. It became a Democratic Parliamentary Republic in 1991. A member of both NATO and the EU, it lies at the northern end of the Adriatic Sea and is bordered by Austria, Italy, Hungry, and Croatia.
The theme of this year’s prayer service is: Come-Everything is Ready and is based on Luke 14:15-24.
World Day of Prayer is supported by sacrificial and benevolent mission offerings given by individuals during these annual services. Each of the 170 counties celebrating has an ecumenical committee of women representing many cultures, races and faith traditions, according to the World Day of Prayer website.
Each country’s committee is responsible for determining the use of the offering as it relates to the theme for each year. Offering grants are made to women and children groups in each country.
In Rockdale, the offering/donations received will be used to fund grants to organizations working on issues that affect women and children both in the United States and worldwide, according to Annette Griesbach.
To participate or for questions contact Griesbach at 512-760-8140 or leave an inquiry on the church phone 512-446-5987.
