At Monday night’s city council meeting the council members heard a recommendation from La Vera Wade to rename East Third Street to Gertharine Green Street in honor of Gertharine Green who, Reporter readers may remember, celebrated her 104th birthday last April with a big parade. And, of course, that measure passed unanimously.

In other business the council decided to hire the J.B. Smith Co. out of Houston to do an audit of Rockdale’s water production and billing system accuracy. Last year the city lost 38%, or 106 million gallons of water, and this audit will tell the city where that water is going. This company fixed another city’s water issues and brought them down to 7% water loss.

During the past year several people have mentioned that they are unable to come to city council meetings and asked if they could be broadcast in some way. Jolen Johnson, husband of new City Secretary Shanna Johnson, gave the council a presentation about how this might be accomplished and several options from which to choose. The council did not make a final decision on which option to choose, but they are going ahead with the plan to start broadcasting.

S everal things need to happen before the 660-home subdivision can get under way and they were all passed on Monday night. After these things are accomplished, the property should close with the city and MDD on Nov. 18.

Elissa Benford-Roberts brought up a long-time ongoing concern for the Washington Heights neighborhood. The streets were paved in the 1980s and that threw off the surveying of the neighborhood previous to the roads being paved. The city agreed that the neighborhood should be replatted.
