Rockdale High School’s welding team will host a competition Thursday and they will do it wearing jackets contributed by a couple of local businesses.
Rockdale Welding Supply and Perry & Perry Builders sponsored the jackets, modeled by the young welders above.
Beginning at 8 a.m. Thursday welding competition will begin in the former HEB Building at Way-mar Plaza (next to Tractor Supply.
Welding will continue until mid-afternoon. The event is open to the public.
High school welders from all over Texas compete to earn American Welding Society Certifications which help bridge the gap between high schools and businesses.
The certifications allow high school graduates to go to work in the welding industry right after graduation.
Over 475 students from over 20 schools have competed in the welding series since it began.
Students compete in several progressively more difficult levels during their high school years.
“The program has become so popular that companies who need welders actively scout these contests looking for employees,” RHS sponsor Art Free said.
