Steve Young is Milam County Judge-Elect.
Young, a Republican, out-polled Democrat Jared Melde 5,418-2,513 Tuesday to win the position being vacated by two-term Republican incumbent Dave Barkemeyer.
Or, to be more accurate, the election ended Tuesday, but balloting stretched out over the past two and one-half weeks.
A record 5,357 persons voted early, easily an early-voting record, even surpassing the 5,039 who voted in the entire 2014 election, the most recent “mid-term” balloting.
Overall turnout was a staggering 53.5 percent, an all-time Milam County record for an off-year election. See story page 1D.
ROCKDALE—Young carried every voting precinct in the county.
In Rockdale’s three precincts he polled 1,681 votes to 712 for Melde.
Young’s best precinct was Rockdale No. 318 where he out-polled Melde 912-329.
Melde’s best was Cameron No. 212 which Young won 509-384.
Countywide, Young drew 68.31 percent of the vote and Melde 31.69 percent.
That was the only contested race at the county level.
CRUZ-O’ROURKE—
In the nationally prominent U.S. Senate race, Milam voters gave the nod to incumbent Republican Ted Cruz over Democratic challenger Beto O’Rourke 5,905 to 1,981. That’s a 74.24 to 24.91-percent spread.
Libertarian Neal Dikeman drew 68 votes.
In Rockdale, Cruz out-polled O’Rourke 1,638-744.
NO TAX HIKE—Milam County voters rejected a proposition which would have given county commissioners the authority to raise county taxes up to 30 cents for a flood control, farm-to-market and lateral roads tax.
Vote was 4,838 against and 2,244 in favor.

EARLY VS. ELECTION DAY—Many more Milam County voters took advantage of early voting, compared to coming out on Tuesday.
In the governor’s race, the contest in which the most votes were cast, there were 5,354 early votes and 2,604 persons voted “election day.”
That’s a 67 to 33-percent split in favor of early balloting in Milam.
