ROCKDALE ISD HIT BY PHISHING SCAM
An internet "Phisher" (criminal trolling for information) has hit the Rockdale ISD, illegally obtaining W-2 forms for about 350 employees and already causing problems with 2018 income tax filings.
Supt. Denise Monzingo told The Reporter some employees filed their tax returns before the Phisher submitted phony returns to try and falsely obtain refunds, but some employees filed afterwards and were affected.
She said those whose refunds were stolen through the cybercrime will eventually get their money back from the IRS, but it could take up to 120 days.
Rockdale Police and the district are working with the IRS and FBI.
Dr. Monzingo said the phishing email pretended to be her and asked an administrative employee to send the superintendent district employees W-2s "for review."
UPDATE--Since Social Security numbers are on W-2s, many RISD employees are blocking their numbers online. This can be accomplished by going to the Social Security website athttps://www.ssa.gov/onlineservices/ and scrolling down to BLOCK ELECTRONIC ACCESS TO YOUR INFORMATION.
