Book chronicles long-ago life at Pleasant Hill

Neighbor Grover sez five-fourths of people admit they are bad with fractions. Anew book available on Amazon is entitled My Life at Pleasant Hill: A Child’s Perspective. Pleasant Hill is (was) a small farming community some 10 miles southwest of Rockdale.

I’ve quoted a line many times over the years, always to get a laugh, but after events of the past couple of days, I’m starting to think it has crossed the line from humor to wisdom.

All things are possible, only believe

There is a chorus we used to sing in youth conference during evening vespers that goes like this: “Only believe, Only believe; All things are possible, Only believe.” In human life this is the greatest force in all the world.

Iwas one of those guys that carried my lunch to school. When I was a little kid I carried one of those old school metal lunch boxes that got rusty and funky and was thrown away at the end of the school year.

Homecoming

EDITORIAL Rockdale’s annual homecoming is set for Sunday at the Patterson Center and here’s hoping there’s a great turnout. Turnouts have been a concern in recent years. Homecoming was once a major event on the yearly calendar. For proof of that, just check out the history column on this page.

Where was photograph of school’s retirees? Dear editor, I congratulate everyone that was awarded a pin or plaque for their service at Rockdale ISD. I felt that the retirees who served Rockdale ISD for 35-38 years should have been pictured.

The other day somebody commented on something I had written “in my column.” There was only one problem. I hadn’t written anything about that topic in the column which came out that day. I even went to the back files to see if I had written about that topic recently. I hadn’t.

Neighbor Grover sez if your job on the farm is taking care of the chickens, does it makes you a chicken tender? Idid not walk five miles to school and back every day, uphill both ways, as you have undoubtedly heard old-timers say. But I did grow up in the grassburr-goathead era of Tiger Field.
