Entrepreneurs revitalize small towns

It was encouraging to see Editor Mike Brown’s headline on the front page recently that the news about the Bitcoin operation may just be the first of many to utilize the vast Alcoa land holdings.

Rockdale resident was ‘Enola Gay’ crew member

MILAM HISTORY Monday was the 73rd anniversary of the dropping of the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. What does that have to do with Rockdale? The radar operator of the Enola Gay, the plane which delivered the weapon which played a role in ending World War II, lived in Rockdale for 20 years.

Encouragement

Leslie Levine once wrote, “We flourish under the benefits of encouragement and acceptance.” It’s true, and there is a deep need for it in every age. I am convinced that most failures in life are due to a lack of encouragement. A smile, a high five, a “I know you can do it!

Pinch ourselves

EDITORIAL Exciting to imagine what the future may hold for our area’s economy Earthquakes happen when massive underground plates slide by in different directions. A case could be made that something like that is happening to the Rockdale area’s economics. And there’s an earthquake coming.

EDITOR’S CORNER Acouple of weeks ago the city council went into executive session. When the council goes into executive session they pick up and physically shuffle into another room. That’s different from the school board’s executive sessions. They stay where they are and everybody else leaves.

Seed cotton workshop Friday in Buckholts

THE AG SIDE The Texas A&M Agri-Life Extension Service offices in Milam and Bell counties will present a multi-county 2018 Seed Cotton Provision Workshop on Friday (Aug. 3). The program will be from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Buckholts Community Center, 110 West Main in Buckholts.

Cuts, and maybe a new tax, in future

JUDGE’S COMMENTS Milam County Commissioners Court is in the midst of working out a proposed county budget plan for 2019. We have completed our meetings with each of the county department heads and county elected officials.
