At the meeting of the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce an order was passed appropriating $50 for a premium to be given the first bale of 1922 cotton marketed in Rockdale.
Everyone is feeling pinched these days. Grocery and restaurant prices continue their march upward, and we all feel that pang of regret when we pull up to the gas pump.

On behalf of all the vendors at the Chamber of Commerce farmers market, I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who shopped with us. Also, those who just came by and visited with us and exchanged ideas, recipes and happy thoughts.
Since I’ve been writing the “Looking Back” column I have become fascinated with what life in Rockdale was like 100 years ago in 1922. That’s before television. Air conditioning was invented in 1902 but not widely used until it was perfected in 1933.
This week the Commissioners Court, pursuant to the Health and Safety Code, received a petition to create an emergency service district (ESD) for ground and air ambulance services within the county. The Court will conduct a public hearing on August 8 at 10 a.m.
100 YEARS AGO…
The people of the Forest Grove-Oak Hill communities was set to hold a big basket picnic and barbecue at the Grove, to which the general public was invited, and to which candidates were especially invited. All candidates were to be given opportunity to speak.
I pray a lot, it’s what a pastor does. I keep a prayer list and I have columns on my list. I pray for those who are sick physically, sick spiritually, I intercede for my enemies (that list seems to grow all the time), I pray for our president and other leaders around the world.
In chapter twelve of Second Corinthians Paul tells us: “A thorn was given me…” What was this thorn? We don’t know. Sometimes Paul was totally disabled by it. The best guesses are that the thorn was epilepsy or migraine headaches or a malarial fever.
