Milam County Judge Steve Young announced the grim news Tuesday night: another death from COVID-19.

“Again, I am saddened to report the death of another Milam County resident who died as a result of the COVID-19 virus,” he wrote in an email. “This brings our COVID-19 death toll in the county to 53. Since Jan. 1, the vaccine has been available and Milam County government has done just about everything we can to get anyone in the county who wants to get vaccinated, vaccinated. This is a health and safety issue for every resident in this county as the virus affects all of us in many ways.”

“Our case counts are up and continue on an upward spiral. Today we have 33 active cases to report,” he said. “In early July 2021 we were at a low of six cases. The increase is probably due to the gatherings of June 19 and July 4. But, it is also due to the new variants in the county.”

The Delta variant is 50 percent more transmittable than the original virus, he noted.

There have now been four deaths to the disease in July while there were none in June.
