It was a day of celebration, with a parade, speeches, food and lot of visiting as Rockdale observed Juneteenth Saturday.

The parade, termed the largest ever for Juneteenth, formed at the Main-Milam intersection, marched north to East Cameron Avenue (US 79), to San Gabriel and down San Gabriel-Plum-MLK to the park.

At the park there was plenty of food and a keynote speech by Rockdale native Lee Alcorn.

Alcorn, a 1956 Aycock High School graduate and member of state championship football, basketball teams, and also the Purple Tiger track team, went on to establish and lead NAACP chapter in Grand Prairie. He stressed the importance of staying in school.

Master of ceremonies was Henry Miller, Juneteenth committee member.

The Aycock High Class of 1959 came to Juneteenth to celebrate their 60th reunion.

Juneteenth committee members are Lisa Benford-Roberts, Nathan Roberts, Miller, Larry Wilcox, Bobby Lee Tindle, Kefa Mitchell, Terry Jones, Herbert Jones, Kendra Darnell, Lynda Ford, Lucretia Henderson and Terry Larkin.
