The Rockdale mattress factory, occupying a frame store building near the Sap Depot, and the frame store building adjoining and occupied by J.C. Dekle as a residence, were both destroyed by fire. The fire originated in the mattress factory and was evidently caused by a match in the cotton being run through the machine.
Reports from over the county indicate a general good rain all over Milam County. Some sections report a veritable deluge, others a much lighter fall. Here is Rockdale, The Reporter’s estimate is that not much more than one-half inch fell. However, it was plenty to effectually allay the “dust devil” which had gotten to be almost unbearable.
There was a good response to Coach Hughes’ call for a “pep” meeting at the Chamber of Commerce rooms. Twenty-five or 30 high school boys were present, and several athletic fans among the businessmen. Dr. H.T. Coulter was among those present and made good on his promise to tell the boys how to have a winning football team.
Practically unanimous was the agreement among business houses and banks that last Saturday was the best business day experienced by this town in three years. There was a tremendous crown of traders here, with special attractions except general recognition that Rockdale is a good market and good values are given for the money spent.
40 YEARS AGO…
South Milam United Way directors approved a $53,285 budget in preparation for its Sept. 26 through Oct. 8 fundraiser. According to Emmet Perry, United Way’s 1983 campaign chairman, the 12 percent increase over last year’s $47,000 goal is a result of inflation and adding two new agencies to the budget.
Rockdale Reporter publisher Bill Cooke received the “Friend of Education” award from the Beta Nu chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, national professional organization for women in education. The presentation was made by Geri Burnett, awards committee chairman for the chapter. The award presentation was made during a chapter dinner held at the home of Georgie Dyer on Aug. 22.
20 YEARS AGO…
The Rockdale Reporter and Chamber of Commerce were to host the Taste of Home Cooking School on Sept. 8 at the RHS auditorium. Tickets were selling quickly.
Former press secretary to Lady Bird Johnson, political reporter and renowned author and celebrity Liz Carpenter was to speak at the Patterson Civic Center on Sept. 14.
10 YEARS AGO…
By ones and twos, with moms and dads, grandparents and more, marching in a nice, straight line or not so straight, students in the Rockdale ISD returned to classes for the first day of the 2013-14 school term. A total of 1,532 were enrolled the first day, according to Pam Kaufmann, assistant superintendent for instruction and administration. That compares to 1,543 one year ago. The elementary campus enrollment was 413, 356 at the intermediate, 322,at the junior-high and 441 at the high school. Students would be in class for less than one week before getting their first holiday. That will come when Rockdale ISD observed the Labor Day holiday. Classes resumed the following day.
