Master Gardeners set 2019 class schedule

Little River Basin Master Gardener Association (LRBMGA) is opening registration for the 2019 Master Gardener class.

Classes will meet on Wednesdays from Jan. 9 through May 15, from 8:45 a.m. to 12-noon at the Cameron Chamber of Commerce meeting room.

The program offers a minimum of 50 hours of instruction, including field trips.

Fee for the class is $175, which includes The Master Gardener Handbook and other amenities.

Speakers are experts in their fields including lawn care, trees and shrubs, disease and weed management, soils, plant nutrition, vegetable and herb gardening, home fruit production, water conservation, and Earth-Kind.

In exchange for training and to become a certified Master Gardener, 50 volunteer hours are required before the end of the calendar year.

Kinship Holiday Food Drive to assist CPS

Kinship Care, a child information gateway service, is holding its annual Holiday Food Drive to benefit Child Protective Services (CPS) efforts in the Milam County and Central Texas area.

To assist more than 200 caregivers with which Kinship works, the organization needs to following items to fill its holiday baskets:

Canned items—Green beans, cranberry sauce, pumpkin, sweet potatoes/yams, pie fillings, mashed potatoes, instant stuffing, cream of mushroom soup.

Others—Gravy packets, bags of flour, sugar and brown sugar, cornbread mix, French onions, cake mixes and frosting, brownie mixes, Jello mix, marshmallows.

Or any other non perishable items.

Milam County’s donation box is located in the break room of the Child Protective Services office at 605 W. Fourth, Cameron.

Alcoa Retirees slate Christmas meeting

Next meeting of the Rockdale Alcoa Retirees will be the annual Christmas get-together Thursday, Dec. 13, at the Thorndale VFW Hall. Doors open at 5 p.m.

Retirees are reminded to bring canned goods to be donated to area food banks.

All retirees are encouraged to bring their favorite desserts for this meeting.—Doug Williams, spokesman.

Special Needs Support Group plans yule party

Special Needs Support Group will hold its annual Christmas Party from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 4 at the Patterson Civic Center.

The evening will include a catered meal, face painting, cake walk, making candy bars, live music, games and more,

Genealogical society to meet on Tuesday

The Milam County Genealogical Society will meet Tuesday, Nov. 27 at 7 p.m. in the fellowship hall of First Presbyterian Church, 1600 Alcoa, Rockdale.

The new handicap access entrance to the church is adjacent to the Palmer Street entrance to their parking lot.

Florene McDaniel is in charge of the program.

Members with surnames beginning with A through O will be in charge of refreshments. Ice, drinks and paper goods will be provided.
