Historical Society seeks quilts for May 4 exhibit

The Rockdale Historical Society will host a quilt exhibit May 4 at the I&GN Historical Depot and is seeking quilts to display.

Cancer Society hosting washers twice-a-month

The American Cancer Society continues to host twice-monthly washer tourneys at Apache Pass.

Tournaments are the second and fourth Sundays of the month, spokesperson Kim Jeter said.

Next tourney will be next Sunday, March 24, followed by April 14 and 28, May 12 and 26, June 9 and 23, July 14 and 28, Aug. 11 and 25, Sept. 8 and 22, Oct. 13 and 27, Nov. 10 and 24 and Dec 15. (Only one tourney is in December).

“Teams can start signing up at 4:30 and we usually start the tournament by 5:30,” Jeter said. Registration is $20 per team, double elimination, with prizes awarded to places 1-3.

She noted the second Sunday is “bring your partner” and the fourth Sunday “draw your partner.”

Music Club hears

Keyboard youngsters

The Matinee Musical Club held its annual Junior Showcase at First Presbyterian Church with The Keyboard Melody Makers, piano students of Dixie Whit-more. (See above).

President Annette Griesbach greeted the guests, including parents of the students.

Mrs. Whitmore, a senior club member, and piano teacher to the Junior Club, introduced the program and her students.

Elizabeth O’Keefe has also received her first Gold Cup (15 points over a minimum of three years competition.

Griesbach introduced Sophie Thomason, daughter of members Sparky and Leah Thomason, who has recently been accepted to the Boston Crusaders, an elite competitive drum and bugle corps, for the summer competition season.

Griesbach then presented her a check from MMC, to help cover her expenses.

Matinee Musical Club is a member of the Texas and National Federation of Music Clubs.—

American Legion lists

2019 officer candidates

American Legion Carlyle Post 358 is conducting an officer election April 1.

James McKimmey, post commander, said nominations were made March 4 but members may still nominate up to the April 1 meeting.

He said vote will be by ballot and members must present 2019 membership cards in order to vote.

McKimmey said anyone unable to attend the April 1 meeting, who still wants to vote, should contact the post commander at 254-482-0834 by Monday, March 25.

Chamber ambassadors set Tuesday session

Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors will meet on Tuesday, April 2nd, at noon at the Hogan-Hall Building next to the Chamber.

Theme is ‘Spring is popping out all over’.

Thursday Reading Club gathers at city library

The Thursday Reading Club met at the Lucy Hill Patterson Memorial Library for the March Meeting. Hostess was Carol Simank for the Mardi Gras-themed gathering. Members wore fun decorations and the food followed a Mardi Gras motif.

The program was given by Wilma Owens on the book, “Where the Red Fern Grows” by Wilson Rawls.

Officers for 2019-2020 are-Geri Burnett, president; Wilma Owens, vice-president; Joan Ratliff, secretary and Annette Stone, treasurer. Course of study will be determined by next year’s yearbook committee consisting of Linda Wilson, chairman, Wendie Upson, Denise Starnes, and Barbara Nelson.

The club will host the 1st Friday coffee at the library on April 5 from 8:30-10-30 a. m. All residents of Rockdale and the Milam County area are invited to meet and greet for coffee and pastries.

Reading Club slates

2019 scholarship

Application forms for the Thursday Reading Club’s Bootsie Peebles Memorial Scholarship are available to high school seniors and adults in the community pursuing any type of medical training.

They may be picked up at The Rockdale Reporter offices or at the high school counselors offices in Rockdale, Thorndale and Milano.
