Historical meeting on Monday at courthouse

The Milam County Historical Commission will conduct its first meeting of 2022 on Monday, Feb. 7 at 10 a.m. at the Courthouse in Cameron.

The purpose of this commission is to preserve, protect and promote history within the county. The Commission members are volunteers appointed by the County Commissioners Court to serve.

The meetings are open to the public. Current members are from all across the county including Gause, Milano, Rockdale, Cameron, Thorndale and San Gabriel. Joan Ratliff, of Rockdale, is the current Chairman of the Commission. Anyone interested in promoting and preserving Texas history, particularly involving Milam County, is invited to attend the commission’s meetings.

Senior Center seeking volunteers, donations

The Rockdale Senior Center is in need of volunteers on Mondays to deliver Meals on Wheels twice per month.

They are also asking for donations for their Angel Tree and seeking people to adopt a senior or buy items from their wish list.

Rotary seeks area students for RYLA

Rockdale, Thorndale and Milano High School young men or women interested in developing their leadership skills, and have a great time doing so, are invited to fill out an application for the Rotary Youth Leadership awards (RYLA) program. RYLA is a leadership training and education program for youth who are currently in grades 10 and 11. Home schoolers are welcome to apply.

“Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Rockdale, those selected to participate in RYLA will spend July 17-22 at Variety’s of Texas, located in Killeen where they will take part in fun group activities and hear interesting presentations with other young people sponsored by Rotary clubs throughout Central Texas,” according to RYLA Coordinator Gaye Bland.

RYLA participants receive training from successful professionals with special emphasis on leadership and the importance of ethics and community service.

AA meeting weekly at Crossroads Church

Rockdale Peace Seekers AA meetings are at Crossroads Bible Church, 811 Burleson St.

The meetings are scheduled on Tuesdays and Sundays at 7:30 p.m.

Narcotics Anonymous meeting Thursdays

Narcotics Anonymous meets every Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church.

Heavenly Treasures has half price days for February 11th and 22nd

Heavenly Treasures will have half price days on Tuesday, Feb. 8 and Tuesday, Feb 22.

Exceptions are jewelry and items in the display cases.

Donations are accepted on the back porch, but no furniture is accepted. Food donations should be taken to the food pantry.

Hours are Tuesday through Friday 9 a.m.-noon.

Heart health event at Boutique Warehouse

Boutique Warehouse In The Woods is hosting a free Heart Health event Saturday, Feb. 5 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 2021 CR 347 Loop in Gause.

“Did you know that heart disease is the number one killer of American women each year? In fact, one in four women die of heart disease. Do you know the warning signs?” asks Emily Ditto, owner of Boutique Warehouse.

LVN Kristi Bode will be on-site for this event doing free blood pressure checks, and will provide information on early warning signs of stroke in women, along with some other health habits to help you get the jump on heart disease.

Attendees will get a free blood pressure check and be entered to win a pair of pink Panashe heart earrings.

Milam County Girl Scouts acts of service

Girl Scouts of Central Texas (GSCTX) are celebrating their centennial, the 100th anniversary of the first Girl Scout troop formed in our area in 1921.

“As part of our centennial celebration, Milam County Girl Scouts have chosen to perform service in Milam County. We are looking to do 100 acts of service in our county. We are providing services for free. It can be for a church, organization, city, individual or group,” said Rachel Owens, Milam County Girl Scouts Service Unit Director.
