Rockdale High School senior Devon Whitsel has been named a semifinalist for the 2020 class of Coca-Cola Scholars Program, moving to the next round of the selection process in becoming a Coca-Cola Scholar.

From a pool of 93,075 applications from across the country based on academic excellence, leadership, and service demonstrated in school and community activities, the four Texas High School seniors are among 1,928 seniors selected in the country and 137 selected in Texas.

“We believe that identifying these young leaders throughout the country and encouraging their passion for serving others not only empowers the students but also lifts up those around them,” said Jane Hale Hopkins, President of the Coca-Cola Scholars Program.

“The Coca-Cola system is dedicated to giving back to the communities they serve and the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation is proud to be a part of that commitment,” she said.

Semifinalists will now complete Phase 2 of the process with an independent selection committee reviewing applications and selecting 250 regional finalists by the end of January.

The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation is one of the most recognized and respected achievement-based scholarships in America. It was created in 1986 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Coca-Cola and to establish a legacy for the education of tomorrow’s leaders through college scholarships.
