GLEN JEAN, WV—Five Rockdale Boy Scouts were were among the 45,000 scouts and leaders who attended the 24th World Scout Jamboree, international Scouting’s event, July 22-Aug. 1 in Glen Jean, West Virginia
Rockdale Scout Troop 790 were one of the 169 national organizations that took part in the two-week jamboree at the Summit Bechtel Reserve.
Andy Tischler, Harrison Bender, Logan Keefer, Alex Rubio, and Leader Pete Rubio III were part of the USA Contingent Unit 203.
“They helped welcome foreign scouts including their partner contingent from Sweden,” said Victoria Rubio, mother of Alex. “They also showed a true example of scouting when their unit volunteered to set up camp for the South African contingent who were scheduled to arrive at camp after midnight.”
Over 40,000 scouts and leaders and 10,000 staff, with support from all branches of the military for safety, security, and medical needs made the second largest city in West Virginia, according to Rubio.
The troop earned trading patches, spent time rock climbing, water rafting, mountain biking, kayaking and water skiing. They met scouts from different cultures and from all over the world, Rubio said.
In February, the Scouts allowed girls to join the program and it is now called Scouts BSA. It is estimated around half of the jamboree’s attendees were female, according to news reports.
