CAMERON—Milam County Tax Collector Sherry Mueck says 2019 tax bills have been mailed.
“If you do not receive your bill by the end of October 2019, please contact the Milam County Tax Office,.” she said.
Mueck said taxes are due upon receipt and become delinquent on February 1.
“This means you have until Jan. 31, 2020, to pay your taxes without penalty and interest. You may pay in full on or before Jan. 31,” she added.
However, Milam County offers also the split payment option with the first half of taxes due on or before Nov. 30th and second half due on or before June 30, 2020.
“If you qualify for the Over 65/or disability exemption, you may choose to pay your taxes in four equal installments (quarter payments) with payments due on or before the last day of January, March, May and July,” Mueck said.
She said those who choose the quarter payment options you must give notice by checking the payment option on the tax stub or send a note in writing along with your first payment.
The Milam County Tax Office will send out reminder notice for the 2nd half of split payment, but does not send reminders for the quarter payment option.
Since Nov. 30, falls on a weekend, the Milam County Tax Office Cameron location will accept walk-in payments on Dec. 2, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the Rockdale substation on that day will accept walk in payments from 8 a.m. to 12-noon. and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
“If you are mailing in your split payment, we accept a U S Postmark of Nov. 30, 2019, not postage meter mark. If you are concerned with postmark date, we suggest that you take your payment into a U S Post Office and request a postmark.”
Mueck said the Cameron location has a locked drop box at the front door.
“If you are placing your split payment in drop box, payments needs to be in box by close of business (6 p.m.) Dec. 2. This drop box has two cameras that will show date and time stamp as to when payment was placed in box,” Mueck said.
She said the Cameron Office will also offer extended hours on Dec. 31, and Jan. 31.
Both will be 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
“Please note that the Rockdale Substation will not be offering extended hours on these dates,.” Mueck said.
Milam County Tax Office accepts cash, checks, money orders, cashier’s check, and debit or credit cards.
“Please note that if you pay with debit/credit card that the credit card processing company will charge a courtesy fee of 2.35% with a $1 minimum,” she said.
“This courtesy fee goes directly to a credit card processing company and Milam County does not receive any of the courtesy fees,” Mueck said

Mueck cautioned anyone who did not receive a tax bill that under the State Property Tax Code failure to receive a bill “does not affect the validity of the tax, penalty, or interest, the due date, the existence of a tax lien, or any procedure instituted to collect the tax.”
That’s from the Texas Property Tax Code Section 31.01(g).
