As 2021 comes to a close, the Rockdale Earth Day Committee wants to acknowledge the many individuals, businesses, and entities that played a role in a truly great year. Coming out of 2020, a year in which COVID limited our activities, it was exciting to see over 100 Rockdale ISD staff, students, and teachers participate in our Day of Community Service, April 22nd. Additionally, members of the Rockdale Rotary Club helped with a service project re-trenching and mulching twenty trees throughout Rockdale. Local Girl Scout troops also continued their ongoing work at the Old City and Jewish Cemeteries, and assisting in a project at Rockdale Junior High.
As an organization, Rockdale Earth Day values art in our community. We are thankful for the many junior high art students who submitted designs for this year’s poster, as well as the high school graphic art students who shared their talents in our annual t-shirt design contest. Our students give us so much and their service to the community is a sterling example for all of us to follow.
For a second year, Rockdale Earth Day administered the Yard of the Month program. Six homes were awarded this honor between April and September. Several other homes were nominated for consideration and we are thankful for the care and creativity shown by all nominees.
Each year there is a signature project which we hope has a lasting impact on the community. For 2021, we raised funds and logistical support to bring a nationally known mural artist, Sam Welty, to Rockdale. The Municipal Development District provided a generous donation, as well as a beautiful wall to serve as a canvas. High School art students played an integral part in creating a US flag mural at Veterans Memorial Park. Our goal was to add art, history, and community pride to a few of our walls. And that goal was successfully reached.
As we entered the final two months of 2021, it was our pleasure to partner with both the Kay Theater Foundation and Milam County/the Rockdale One Stop Shop for a Texas Arbor Day project. A total of 13 new trees were added to these two adjacent downtown properties in the 300 block of North Main Street.

Plans are underway for Rockdale Earth Day, 2022. We hope that you will consider participating. Until then, know that any day can be Earth Day! Each of us can prioritize time to clean-up, plant, or commit ourselves to “Re-use, Recycle, and Re-purpose.
