Volunteers were determined 2017’s one-year lapse in Rockdale’s annual Community Thanksgiving Luncheon was going to be just that, a one-year lapse.

Rockdale obviously wants it back. Saturday’s meal, prepared and delivered from the fellowship hall of First Baptist Church, resulted in 1,041 meals being distributed.

That’s almost twice the 575 who where served in 2016, the last year the meal was held.

It’s the most persons participating since an almost identical 1,060 plates were served on 2013.

The Community Thanksgiving Lunch originated by the New Hope Baptist Church congregation and was held in the church’s fellowship hall until 2010.

It outgrew that facility and was held in the New Salem HD Clubhouse at Fair Park, before moving to First Baptist in 2013.

Volunteers from many Rockdale congregations participate in the huge effort, which includes delivering plates throughout the Rockdale community.

Many persons picked up their meals to go at the fellowship hall.

Organizers expressed appreciation to all the volunteers who participated and to those who donated to the effort.
