Two young Thorndale residents have been awarded the EMS Citizens of the Year award for their efforts in saving the lives of two persons in a highway crash.

Chris Posey and Joseph Posey were presented the award by the Texas Dept.of Services at the 2019 Texas EMS Conference in Forth Worth.

According to a family spokesperson, Last spring the Poseys were traveling to Thorndale from Bastrop when they passed by a car traveling at a high rate of speed.

That car crested a hill, became airborne, crashed through a fence and into a tree.

The duo came upon the wreck and immediately went into action to render aid.

The Poseys were able to get the dazed passenger out through a side window.

However, the driver was more seriously injured. The Poseys managed to open the driver side door and extract him from the vehicle. He was bleeding profusely from a leg and described his foot as “barely attached” from a shattered bone.

The duo controlled the bleeding and pulled both men to safety. About a minute later the car burst into flames.

At the ceremony the heroic actions were summed up: “They had been at the right place at the right time. If they had not, these victims would have been killed, if not by the wreck, then by the fire.

“They saw someone in need of help and, without thinking of their own safety, went to help strangers.”

The Citizen Award honors a private citizen for a heroic lifesaving act or unique advocacy of EMS.
