Rockdale ISD trustees heard administrators give a presentation on the state’s Performance-Based Monitoring Analysis System (PBMAS) and heard first semester discipline statistics during a regular meeting Monday.
PBMAS, which is an automated data system that annually reports the performance of school districts and charter schools, puts schools in tiers from zero to four, with four being the lowest, on how districts are performing with students in special education or bilingual education/ESL.
RISD was given a “one” in special education for career and technical education and a “one” in STAAR testing.
RISD was given a “three” by the Texas Education Agency for ESL (English as a Second Language) students who STAAR tested in math, science and writing.
“The challenge with ESL isn’t younger kids who haven’t tested before,” said Dr. Denise Monzingo, RISD superintendent. “It’s mainly students who move in during junior high or high school.”
“The number is so small on those campuses that one or two students can tip your PBMAS grade either way,” she said
DISCIPLINE—Monzingo gave a presentation outlining RISD discipline statistics from the first day of school to Monday, Feb. 11.
During that time, Rock-dale schools had 14 students in the Disciplinary Alternative Education Program (DAEP) with eight at RHS, five at RJH and one at the intermediate campus.
Rockdale ISD had 384 students in In-School Suspension (ISS) with 252 at RHS, 131 at the junior high and one at RIS.
CALENDAR—Trustees also okayed the 2019-2020 academic calendar which includes a holiday on the Friday of the 2019 Fair.
Peggy Eckman addressed the board, during public comments, on the difficulty of finding people interested in working with RISD’s after-school program, iTigers.
“It’s during five and seven in the evening,” Eckman said. “A lot of people who could do it are at home with family after a long day at work, and it just doesn’t pay enough for them to make that sacrifice. We should hire some of our top students,” she said.
