Tiger pitcher Zac Davis signed a letter of intent to play collegiate baseball for Centenary College of Louisiana in front of friends, family and RHS faculty on Friday, Dec. 21 in the Tiger gymnasium.

“Not too many athletes are able to play at the (college) level, and it’s a blessing,” Davis said. “I’d like to thank everyone who came today, and everyone that’s helped me get to this point, to all the people that came up to the field with me to throw on those cold and rainy days.

“I want to thank my coaches and my parents for helping me love baseball the way that I do. I especially want to thank my Dad, who’s taken many fastballs and splitters to shins and toes, and is probably still paying the price for those.”

Rockdale High School head football coach and athletic director Jeff Miller praised Davis for his determination and commitment.

“They have that quote that the great ones are willing to work when nobody is watching,” Miller said. “When I come up to the school all hours of the day, Zac’s up here either with one of his parents, a friend or by himself working on the stuff that his coaches have recommended that he do.

“He’s a great role model, a great young man and a heck of a baseball player,” he said. “We love to see kids at Rockdale go to the next level, because they represent us so well. We love having our name tied to people like Zac.”

Davis’s parents, Todd and Debbie, also expressed excitement for their son’s future.

“We’re so proud that it doesn’t even really register right now,” said Todd Davis, the pitcher’s father. “He’s been working hard for years, and it’s great to see him have the opportunity to pursue an education through one of his passions.

“Centenary is also a really good school, and they’re in the same conference as Texas Lutheran, Trinity and Southwestern. We’ll be able to see him a lot and we’re excited for the next step.”

Centenary is a member of the NCAA Division III’s Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC).

Davis, a six-foot, two-inch tall right-handed pitcher, is also looking to be a part of the Gent’s pitching staff in the 2019 season.

“I know (Centenary) is losing their top pitcher,” Davis said. “I don’t think I’ll be red-shirting, and I think I have an opportunity to pitch a little bit next season.

“I’m also excited to get to a fun town like Shreveport. The school only has six hundred students, which isn’t much bigger than Rockdale, and I also get to take a trip to Paris in the fall semester with the college. I’m definitely looking forward to next year.”

Davis has been an all-district selection the past three years, and has thrown 107 strikeouts in 91.2 innings as a member of the Rockdale Tigers. He plans to pursue a degree in business.
