The Rockdale Lady Tiger softball team started off their week with a 4-4 tie in four and a half innings of play against the Taylor Lady Ducks Monday night.

The teams were scheduled to play on Tuesday, but had to move the game up because many of Taylor’s softball players had a basketball game at Liberty Hill.

“They wouldn’t have had enough to scrimmage,” Erin Palmer, RHS softball coach said. “And that’s something you encounter really early in the season.”

The Lady Tigers were led by Karley Leopold with two hits, and three runs batted in (RBI). Leopold also had three strikeouts in 3.2 innings pitched for the blue-and-gold.

“We did a lot of things really well,” said Palmer. “Karley had a really good game at the plate as well as the mound.

“Emily Depine also had two hits. One was a line drive right at the third baseman’s glove, but she still hit the ball really well for us last night.”

The Lady Tigers scrimmage Smithville 6:30 p.m. on Friday, who will also be missing multiple girls due to scheduling conflicts.

“Smithville also has a lot of girls in basketball right now and we did pretty well against them last year,” Palmer said. “But you never go into a game expecting to win.

“In the mean time, we have plenty of stuff we need to get better at. We need to work on catching pop-ups and being more aggressive base runners. In Taylor, we ended two innings with the bases loaded.”

Last Friday – RHS got its first win on their new softball field with its 10-0 shutout against Burnet.

Leopold allowed two hits and had eight strikeouts in her first win of the season.

“Burnet was also missing much of their team because of basketball,” Palmer said. “But we were crushing the ball.”

Autumn Montelongo led the Lady Tigers at the plate with two hits and two RBI’s. Macy Knesek, Depine, Leopold and Montelongo all had doubles for Rockdale

The Lady Tigers also lost 16-1 to Caldwell on Monday, Jan. 28. The Lady Hornets scored six runs in the second inning and five in the third to grab the game early. Depine, Knesek, Montelongo and Averie Hobbs all had hits for the blue-and-gold.

“Caldwell has always been a solid team as long as I’ve been here, and they were only missing two girls to basketball,” Palmer said. “But we put ourselves in bad situations in the first couple of innings. Eliminating errors was my takeaway from game.”
