The Rockdale Lady Tiger basketball team fell for the second time to Little River-Academy 39-21 with three more District 19-3A games left on the schedule.

“We didn’t quite get off to a good start,” said Meredith Caffey, Rockdale High School girl’s head basketball coach. “They had a couple of good scorers that got off to a great start and were able to get past our half-court trap.”

The Lady Tigers, 4-7 in district, trailed 18-2 at the end of the first quarter, but switched their defense and outscored the Lady Bees 12-9.

“After the first quarter, we decided to switch things up and get into a two-three zone,” Caffey, a first-year coach at RHS, said. “That helped us prevent Academy from going on another run.”

The Lady Bees outscored RHS 12-7 in the second half and won the game 39-21.

The Lady Tigers were led by Anna Harmon with eight points and four rebounds, and Andrea Salazar with seven points and nine rebounds. Rockdale was 22 percent from the floor with 6-27 shooting.

Earlier in the week, Rockdale took down McGregor for the second time this season with a 50-49 win. According to assistant coach Brian Thomas, the Lady Tigers hit big free throws in the fourth quarter to beat the Lady Bulldogs.

Harmon had a double-double with 22 points and 15 rebounds. Miah Beckwith had seven and Salazar and Payton Miller both had six.

The Lady Tigers played the Troy Trojanettes on Tuesday after press time and face Rogers at 6:15 p.m., Friday on the road.

The Lady Tigers lost to Troy 58-32 in their first matchup and fell to Rogers 60-30, when they played the Lady Eagles at home.

“Well, the first time we played Rogers, we had that slip up in the second quarter,” Caffey said, describing the Lady Eagles outscoring RHS 27-9. “The common thread in many of our losses is that we have one quarter where we are outscored by a lot of points, and it’s hard to make up the difference.

“A lot of it has to do with getting in foul trouble early. Teams are able to take advantage of us when one or two of our best defenders are on the bench,” she said. “But we’re also a young team with only one senior on the roster, so a lot of it also winds downs to playing teams with more experience.”
