I was talking to my friend Brenda the other day. She and I go way back to our days working together at The Houston Post. When The Post closed we both went to the Houston Chronicle. She and her late husband had a change of life baby and I came up with a name for her: Vanessa Van Straten.

Milam County has undertaken what may be the most aggressive project ever undertaken by county government—a regional training center. The idea is to provide training for all ages here in Milam County for a host of different types of non-college careers.

100 YEARS AGO Mr. and Mrs. E.A. Green took all the children in and around Rockdale for a day’s outing on the San Gabriel River for pecan gathering, etc. Reporter readers were asked to phone 175 not later than 6 p.m. Saturday to get a head count so there would be enough dinner for all.

Each year in the United States, about 255,000 women get breast cancer and 42,000 women die from the disease. Men also get breast cancer, but it is not very common. About 1 out of every 100 breast cancers diagnosed in the United States is found in a man.

I was sitting outside the other night and the evening air was so refreshingly nice. Suddenly, I started sweating profusely for no apparent reason. I went inside and put on a thinner t-shirt thinking that would help. Then it all went away as quickly as it started. Is male menopause a thing?

100 YEARS AGO Maxie’s Theatre had the following movies playing 100 years ago this week: Viola Dana in “Home Stuff” and a two-reel Christie Comedy on Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday and Thursdays showing was “Passion Flower” staring Norma Talmadge.

Of the 8,787 people who have died in Texas due to COVID-19 since early February, at least 43 were fully vaccinated, the Texas Department of State Health Services said. That means 99.5% of people who died due to COVID-19 in Texas from Feb. 8 to July 14 were unvaccinated, while 0.

A letter last week from Ron Rabinowitz had his organization erroneously listed as the VFW. It should have been listed as the American Legion. The Reporter regrets the error.

Some historical jewelry going to auction

As someone who can’t stand wearing jewelry of any kind, I have an unusual interest in jewelry. Especially historical jewels. Christies Geneva will soon put up for auction two diamond bracelets that were owned and worn by the last Queen of France, Marie Antionette. That’s pretty interesting.
