Courthouse clock, chimes due repairs

JUDGE’S COMMENTS Our roof is leaking But not for long. Our iconic courthouse was built in 1890, almost 130 years ago, and needs a few repairs including a new roof. Thanks to our Milam County Historical Commission, repairs are about to begin.

4-H plans summer activities in Milam

COMMENTS FROM MICAH Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and Milam County 4-H will hold 2 free day camps and some other fun activities this summer. Fun Day Camp will be held June 7 and is for Clovers through K-second grade and will be at the Bea’s Kitchen in Cameron. Hours are 9 a.m. to 12-noon.

Let’s turn out

EDITORIAL In 1980,—the first Rockdale City Council election with a mayor’s race under the new city charter—the turnout was 515. That was termed “extremely light.” Thirty-six years later, in 2016, the most recent council race with a contested mayoral ballot, before this year’s, the turnout was 528.

EDITOR’S CORNER We’ve recently returned from a press convention in nearby La Grange. In fact, during our stay I got to thinking about the “nearby” part. And came to the conclusion La Grange is the nearest to Rockdale I have ever intentionally spent a night.

What a sweet week for Milam County

100 YEARS AGO.... Vice-President Marshall’s quick speech in Rockdale was over but the repercussions lingered. Cameron Enterprise Publisher W. M. Cobb said he came aboard the vice-president’s train car and unsuccessfully invited him to Cameron.
