On Sunday when I posted a photo of the McVoy’s building, people flocked to the post with good memories about the place. I’m sharing some of them here.

“Sad! Spent lots of time browsing those aisles, eating red rimmed bologna from the deli, pulling cokes in glass bottles out of the machine—they were hard to get out! Countless Popsicles and of course the unofficial Rockdale petting zoo that was always on the side by the feed.”—Amie Stone King “Oddly enough, the first thing I remember about McVoy’s is the jar of pickled pig feet in that huge jar setting on the counter of the meat dept. Such nice people, the McVoy family.”—Sophia Norman “So many memories. Five generations of my family. Dating back to my Grandparents, their children: my Mom and all her siblings. Me and all my siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews, grands, great grands. I’m discussing this now with my cousins as we reminisce about the fond memories.”—Willow Bell Moultrie-Robertson “We used to pick pecans and sell them there. We also shopped there every day. That was my family go to store. We loved Mr. McVoy. Everyone who worked there was so nice. I got my first pink Easter chick there. Lots and lots of memories!”—Sharee Mitchell “Many fond memories for me of the store and the McVoy family. Love them all!”—Susan Grindle Green “I think about buying candy and Popsicles here. I can see my mom and my grandma shopping in the meat department. It was such an awesome experience for me as a kid going in that store. Memories I will treasure forever. My grandmother also worked at the McVoy’s house. I went there with her many times to help.”—Felicia Wesley “I was in the fifth grade when our dad burned his leg and was off work for a year. The McVoys did so much for our family. I will never forget that.”—Elizabeth Pounders Beason “Hundreds of stories were told inside this old historic store, and a whole lot more were told outside sitting on the bench and the sidewalk. Lots of memories.”—Barbara Gross “So sad. We were there every Saturday like clockwork. They had what we needed. Best bologna ever.”— Judy Marks “I worked there in high school. I had so much fun helping Clyde in the meat market. He could really pull some pranks on me! Ms. Winnie was always so sweet to work with. I also worked there answering the phone and checking people out when it was just a feed store. The stories I heard. Great memories.”—Amanda von Gonten “Wow, so many memories as a kid there. Me and my cousins would pick pecans all week after school and go sell them there. That’s how we made money for our BMX bikes, BMX parts, to play video games at Midway Grocery and to buy our favorite music albums.”—John J, Pentoja “Used to love to go to McVoy’s and the vegetable plants and see the chickens for sale. Adolf always had a big smile and was so friendly.”— Caroline Billig “I can still remember the smell as you’d walk in! So many great memories for all.”—Ashley Cherie Gerner “I remember the old soda pop machine where you opened the little door and pulled the bottles out after you paid. Oh, the memories.”— Jeri Glenn “Wow. McVoy’s was such a huge part of my childhood. My grandmother Margie Abbott did their books for many years.”—Lee Nichols “I wonder if the bench with the quarter glued to it is still there!”—Steven Garza “I have the bench.”—Family member Jenny Gebhart “Good to read all those great memories!”—Family member Janice Pelzel
