FALLING FAR FROM THE TREE

We had a house full of people on Saturday for our annual shrimp boil and we all had a good time. This year it fell on Mother’s Day weekend, and we had four moms to celebrate.

Noelia cooked up a storm and everything was delicious. I hope all you moms enjoyed your special day. —kwc— CASA of Milam County will hold a pancake breakfast on June 13 from 6 to 8 a.m. at the Cameron Volunteer Fire Department. They just went on the market last week so that shows you that people have been waiting to jump on these brand-new homes.

I am working on a story about the street names in the subdivision, some of which have been changed to reflect some special people. One Street is Sandoval and another is Pickel, honoring the memory of two Rockdale kids—Alex Sandoval and Dustin Pickel, who both lost their lives to cancer far too early.

Perry is another street so named for George Sessions Perry, the most famous writer from Rockdale.

I know that city councilwoman Esmeralda Ruelas-Olivares was one person on the committee to suggest new names reflecting Rockdale’s history and she and I will be getting together soon so I can share the news with our readers. I just think that is so special, as was the fact that Ranch Road Properties, owners of Cornerstone Subdivision, was so amenable to changing the street names. —kwc— Another oldie but goodie from my friend Ashley McKee Karl: A man was dining alone in a fancy restaurant and there was a gorgeous redhead sitting at the next table. He had been checking her out since he sat down, but lacked the nerve to talk with her.

Suddenly she sneezed, and her glass eye came flying out of its socket towards the man. He reflexively reached out, grabbed it out of the air, and handed it back.

“Oh my, I am so sorry,’ the woman said, as she popped her eye back in place. “Let me buy your dinner to make it up to you.’

They enjoyed a wonderful dinner together, and afterwards they went to the theatre followed by drinks. They talked, they laughed, she shared her deepest dreams and he shared his. She listened to him with interest.

After paying for everything, she asked him if he would like to come to her place for a nightcap and stay for breakfast. They had a wonderful, wonderful time. The next morning, she cooked a gourmet meal with all the trimmings. The guy was amazed. Everything had been so incredible!

“You know,” he said, “you are the perfect woman. Are you this nice to every guy you meet?”

“No,” she replied” You’re just the first man who happened to catch my eye.”
