10-20-40-100 YEARS AGO 100 YEARS AGO…

Ben Lowenstein Jr. is this week establishing Rockdale’s newest business venture, to be called “Lowenstein Five and Ten Cent Store.” It will occupy the building on Main Street recently vacated by Mrs. Dora Poole’s millinery store, and Mr. Lowenstein is this week installing regulation “Kress” fixtures and stock. His opening announcement will be made in next week’s Reporter.

Tuesday evening Mr. and Mrs. E.B. Phillips entertained with the game of “42” in compliment to their sister, Mrs. E.J. Douglass of Taylor. The tables were placed i circle fashion on the brilliantly lighted lawn. The punch table was artistically arranged under a beautiful arbor of queen’s crown, the large bowl to center of table being also embedded in the bright coral wreath. Here Misses Helen Douglass and Dorothy Phillips in dainty evening frocks, served the refreshing nectar to the arriving guests. At the conclusion of the games, Mrs. Douglass the honoree, was presented with a bottle of narcissus perfume. A refreshing ice course terminated this delightful affair.

School w ill open in Rockdale Sept. 15. This week all the teachers are over at Belton attending the Institute as required by law. All arrangements are being completed for the housing of the first three grades in the new Primary building, just completed, and the outlook is bright for a most successful school term.

40 YEARS AGO…

The Space Shuttle was orbiting the earth, and the AT&T Dial-A-Shuttle broadcast was in full tilt at the Johnson Space Center in Houston with RHS teacher Vickie Caffey at the microphone. Miss Caffey is one of about 15 volunteers who work eight-hour shifts keeping the phone customers up to date on shuttle activities.

Mr s. Louis G. Gest received the Yard of the Month award from the Linwood Acres Garden Club for the month of September. Mrs. Gest, who resides at 315 Bowser, received the award from Garden Club representative Loray Miller.

20 YEARS AGO…

Rockdale and Milam County will be without ambulance service after November 30 and a committee of representatives from the county and cities of Rockdale and Cameron is scrambling to find alternatives. Rockdale Mayor John Shoemake, a member of the nine-member committee, said Scott & White Emergency Medical Services has notified the city it will end its ambulance service here on Nov. 30.

10 YEARS AGO…

A Rockdale native who returned to his hometown 40 years ago this summer to practice medicine, and stayed, is being recognized with a day in his honor. Mayor John King has proclaimed Sept. 15 as Dr. John M. Weed III Day in Rockdale. Dr. Weed and wife, Jeanie, attended the city council session at City Hall to hear King read the proclamation.
