Thomas E. Neely, of Rockdale, recently appointed supervisor of State Highways for that portion of Milam County south of Little River, has already enthusiastically upon his work Mr. Neely contemplates a trip to Austin this week to confer with highway officials. One of the first things Mr. Neely will attempt will be the spreading of gravel on that portion of the Sap Highway leading north out of Rockdale to the Tracy crossroads. This is one of the most important miles of highway in the county, bearing probably as heavy a traffic as another other stretch of road in the entire county.
George P. Barron, Scout Executive for this area, announces that he will hold a series of schools for the older boys of the Boy Scouts—those holding the positions of patrol leaders and assistants, and to include all Boy Scouts over the age of 13 years. The purpose of these schools is to instruct the older boys in leadership and acquaint them thoroughly with their responsibilities in the patrol-leading plan of scouting.
Mr. H. Gruetzner late of Giddings, has opened a new tailor shop in Rockdale which he calls the “No-D-Lay Tailor Shop.” He is located in the Lowenstein building two doors south of the Rockdale State Bank on Main Street and invites a portion of your patronage through a display ad to be found elsewhere in this issue.
Mrs. Ben Lowenstein delightfully entertained the Bridge Club Saturday afternoon. All thought of the cold blustery weather without vanished as the guests entered the doors of this hospitable home and were greeted with a veritable picture of spring. Peach blossoms, lilacs and sweet peas were artistically arranged in wall vases, bowls and baskets throughout the lower floor. Mrs. Lowenstein served a delicious and elaborate combination course on attractive bamboo trays.
Through the activities of the newly organized Young Men’s Business League Rockdale is to the beneficiary of give carloads of gravel donated by the S.A.&A.P Railway for use on East Cameron Street between the Sap station and the post office. The Y.M.B.L has been quietly at work on the proposition of street improvement since its organization and hopes to be of considerable help to the city government along that line.

Jack Drake, representing the Alcoa Foundation, presented a $10,000 check to the Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department building fund. Accepting the check were RVFD President Otto Brogger Jr., Fire Chief Earl Whitmore and Fire Marshal John Sonntag.
Rockdale school trustees met Tuesday to begin screening for the superintendent position and set April 9 as the date to hire a replacement for Supt. Bill Ortego. Board President Don Roddam, and trustees John Rinn and Miller Bassler were named as a screening committee which is to narrow the field of approximately 35 candidates down to 10.

Rockdale skateboarders got a air-grabbing victory in the form a 4-2 city council vote Monday to approve a new skate park at the corner of Wilcox and Mill Street.
One Rockdalian with family roots here going back to 1884 was toasted in Fort Worth last week. Dr Lucile Estell, retired educator and local history buff, was honored as the first baby born at Fort Worth’s Harris-Methodist Hospital.

Two Main Street venues will host an auto show and rockand- roll dance Saturday, making downtown Rockdale the place to be on the first full day of spring.
