W.E. White and T.D. Rountree entertained a large number of friends with an impromptu barbecue luncheon at their new oil well Wednesday afternoon and evening. Everything good to eat for a picnic lunch was provided in bountiful quantity, and the two hosts were assisted by their wives and other ladies. Hon. E.A. Camp acted as toastmaster and a number of short talks were enjoyed, all more or less congratulatory to the hosts for their good fortune in bringing in a good oil well. Former Governor John Lind, of Minnesota, who is now interested in the local oil field, was the principal speaker.
Mayor and Mrs. H.C. Meyer entertained the “Ye Merrie Wives Club” Friday evening in their colonial home, which was beautifully ornamented with sprig roses, arranged in all vantage places. Mrs. Gentry assisted in receiving the guests to the reception rooms, where the hostess served delightful punch. Very soon the group were asked to go up to the thirdfl oor hall to play “42.” Then the hostess served a buffet- style desserts of delicious cream in the form of Easter rabbits with angel and caramel cake in the spacious dining room and conservatory.
The Lutheran congregation of Rockdale has just completed has just completed the work of remodeling the church on West Bell Street and now have a house of worship of which they are justly proud. The building has been enlarged and improved in several details, and work is now progressing on the concrete curbing. The lot will be nicely terraced, and the property will present a handsome appearance when completed.
The First Baptist church was crowded to its utmost capacity last Sunday night, the occasion being the farewell sermon of Pastor Jesse Garrett, who resigned recently in order to accept the call to the Rosen Heights Church in Fort Worth. The Methodist Church congregation headed by their pastor, Rev. A.A. Tharp, came over in a spirit of fellowship and brotherly love, and the service was featured by a talk from Bro. Tharp in which he expressed the sentiment, not only of his church, but of the entire town, in regretting the loss to Rockdale of Bro. Garrett and wife, and in wishing them Godspeed in their new work.

Friday was the day volunteer firemen have longed to see as serious excavation work at the site of their proposed new fire station got underway at the corner of Wilcox and Bell. The site work is needed so Rhodes Building Systems of Somerville can begin pouring a slab for a 7,000-square-foot metal building which will eventually be a two-story, fourbay fire station.
Cast members of “Charley’s Aunt,” Rockdale High Schools award-winning entry int he UIL One-Act Play Contest, got into character backstage shortly before going onstage in UIL regional competition last week in Bellville. The cast went on to win the contest and earn a trip to state April 25-26.

Fresh from an exciting weekend in which two Lady Tiger tracksters placed at the Texas Relays, Rockdale High School teams will wind up two days of competition in the District 19AAA meet at Manor. Leslie Starnes was fifth in the pole vault while Mentie York was fifth in the shot put at the Texas Relays.

Rockdale, it’s time to look better than you have in years. At least 14 teams and scores—maybe hundreds— of volunteers will fan out through the city Saturday with a goal of the biggest cleanup effort in decades. It’s for Earth Day, which is actually four days later, and is being held in conjunction with the city’s spring Stash Your Trash Day, also set for Saturday.
