SLR Ranch to retain focus on ‘green’

milesys14 Sandow Lakes Ranch, the huge development on the former Alcoa mining production land, stated this week it would keep a focus on open and green spaces for about one third of the entire project.

SLR announced recently its Advanced Manufacturing and Logistix Campus, and also began demolition of Sandow Power Station No. 5.

But CEO Randall Kendrick said previously his company’s vision also includes “an integration of environmentally- focused construction strategies, including ‘old to new,’ ‘brown to green,’ ‘purpose to re-purpose’ and ‘adaptive reuse.’” This week, he defined his desire for keeping a lot of open space throughout the project.

“Our vision also incorporates a robust number of open spaces, such as, green space, green belt, tree plots, parks, trails, waterways and water bodies,” Kendrick said. “In fact, about one third of the entire Sandow Lakes Ranch property is dedicated open space that will be managed long term by the SLR parks and recreation team.” That team is being formed now.

Trees

“As we build for the future, we intend to remember and incorporate the best of the past,” Kendrick said. “Our plans are to save the best of the specimen trees on site.

“The Ranch contains an excellent variety of hardwood trees that are not currently in the right longterm location. We have identified a range of tree varieties such as Live Oaks, Red Oaks, White Oaks, Pin Oaks, Water Oaks, Bur Oaks, Hickory and Pecan to name a few,” he said. “To relocate and preserve these trees, in partnership with Mine Services Inc., Sandow Lakes Ranch has secured one of the largest tree spades in existence.

Kendrick said the tree spade demonstrates SLR’s commitment to preserving the best parts of Sandow Lakes Ranch for the future of Central Texas. The tree spade will be on display for the public to see at the upcoming Rockdale Fair.

Kendrick said with the Rockdale Fair a few weeks before Thanksgiving, it’s a chance to give back.

“To assist those in need, SLR will make $5,000 donations to food banks in Rockdale and Cameron,” Kendrick said.
