James H. Banks Jr., 78, of Rockdale died Friday, Dec. 29, 2017, at Scott & White Hospital in Temple. Funeral services will be held at 12-noon Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018, at Phillips & Lucke y Funeral Home in Rockdale, with burial at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Rockdale. Visitation is set for 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale. Mr. Banks was born to James and Ruby (Sansom) Banks on Oct. 5, 1939, in the Liberty Hill community near Rockdale. Rockdale was home and where he lived his entire life. Mr. Banks attended Aycock High School in Rockdale and graduated in 1958. He married Johnnie D. Sanders on Feb. 2, 1961. Mr. Banks became a member of Springfield Baptist Church at an early age and attended his entire life. He was an active member of the church where he served as a deacon, church treasurer and Sunday school superintendent for many years. He worked for Alcoa for 40 years. After retiring, he volunteered at the local food bank. Mr. Banks was preceded in death by his parents, James and Ruby Banks; two brothers, Paul Banks and Marvin Banks; and four sisters, Wanda Lee Banks Green, Margaret Banks Flowers, LaVara Banks Heslip and Annie Bell Banks. Survivors are his wife of 56 years, Johnnie D. Banks of Rockdale; two children, James Vincent Banks and wife Barbara of Round Rock, and Jhamhon Nealy and husband Michael of Fort Worth; a brother, Stanley Banks and wife Ollie of Houston; four sisters, Allie Powells of San Francisco, California, Jewel Johnson and husband Gerald of Mansfield, Betty Bell and husband John and Ruby C. Hall and husband Reginald, all of Houston; six grandchildren, Jason, Vincent, Brielle, Ondrea, Michael and Miles; and a great-grandchild, Jayla.
