Dear Motor Medics, I’m about ready to start hauling my trailer for the season and will be using more than one vehicle.
What kind of things should I be thinking about before heading out with a trailer?
Mike in Decorah, Iowa
Dear Mike, I’m glad that you’re thinking ahead. Too many people just assume the vehicle they have is ready just because it has a hitch on the back.
The first place to start is to make sure what you are pulling can safely be towed without overloading your vehicle, once that it done a safety inspection is in order. All of the items that the vehicle needs to operate such as steering, brakes, cooling, etc. will now be done for two so if it can’t handle itself how will it handle towing?
Have the vehicle raised on a hoist to check the suspension and brakes, replace worn parts for safety. Check the tires and make sure they are properly inflated and not cracked. Also check their load rating.
Check the condition of the hitch and light wiring and inspect your engine and transmission cooling systems. Dirt and debris should be rinsed away from the cores with low pressure water.
If you do not have a transmission cooler ask your mechanic about one, it may save you from having a transmission replaced prematurely.
Don’t forget to check the trailer for safety as well. Be sure to ask your mechanic about further towing preparations. Take care, The Motor Medics
