Dear editor, In the Year of Celebration, we have so many reasons to be grateful. We will soon be celebrating our city’s 150th birthday. We thought this would be a great opportunity to reflect on what makes Rockdale special to you. I’ll start.
• The Budget Inn is closed and under new ownership.
• The property at Travis and US 79 has been acquired by the Municipal Development District and will be cleared and put back into private, productive re-use.
• Downtown looks better than it has for years thanks to the efforts of the Rockdale Downtown Association (Kara Clore), City Council, specifically Council members Kyler Walker and Esme Ruelas-Olivares, the Municipal Development District, Juan Rubio, city staff and volunteers.
• The downtown mill and overlay street project is finally done!
• The long awaited cast iron water line replacement project is underway.
• The $4.3M drainage project gets started this month.
• We have a City Council committed to the public good, including individually helping local residents.
• Long-standing issues (water, wastewater, drainage) are being addressed because the City Council made the hard choices and took on the necessary debt to effect change.
• I’m grateful for residents who stop by my office with suggestions for how we can improve our city and they come with open and sincere hearts.
• I’m grateful for the many volunteers who are spending quite a bit of their free time to plan the city’s 150th birthday celebration; and I’m grateful for community leaders who are willing to collaborate to move Rockdale forward.
