What’s going on in high school sports? Just recently I read about 11 high school lacrosse players from Westhill High School in Syracuse, New York, that were arrested and charged with unlawful imprisonment following a hazing incident.
They basically kidnapped some teammates. They put pillowcases over their heads, tied them up and placed them in trunks of cars while dressed up in black clothing with their faces covered. This was all at gun and knife point while these young men were on their way to McDonald’s.
I remember back in the day during the athletic period a teammate had a watch stolen and Coach Johnson had lockers installed and we started locking up our clothes and wallets. A stolen Timex sounds pretty tame compared to being kidnapped on the way to get a burger and fries. —ka— I went back into the vaults this week. In 1972 the Milam County legend Lee Roy Caffey was set to play in San Diego. He was tired of being on the bench while wearing a Cowboy uniform. Of course Caffey spent years with the Super Bowl-Lombardi era Packers where he was a linebacking legend for Green Bay.
Also in 1972 former Tiger and current Lamar University star Richard Kubiak was nominated as Southland Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week. Lamar’s head coach Vernon Glass said of Kubiak, “Richard is the heart of our defense. He’s the brains of the defense. He’s not the biggest linebacker but he’s always in the right place at the right time.”
Head football coach Tootie Roach was looking forward to student-athletes like Kelly Ballew, Ward Roddam, Dennis Brooks, David Woods, Jeff Noack, Scott Heintze and James Powell helping the 19811982 Tiger football team. Big Blue was picked to finish fourth in 23AAA that year. Caldwell was picked to repeat as district champions.
1994 was a good year for Lady Tiger (Tigerette) volleyball. They were district champions and head coach Laura Boyer was hoping to repeat in 1995.
In 1995, Rock Eanes was providing leadership to the Tiger baseball team. I remember when the Blonde would watch him at the Rocking R where she worked for a short time. Head basketball Coach Dean Hollinsgworth had the Blue & Gold headed to the state tournament. P.J. Williams was one of the studs on this team. Also in 1995 Tanya Ortega broke a RHS record in the 3200m, she clocked an 11:46.15. The old record was established in 1994 by Resha Dixon.
2007 had Coach Jeff Miller trying to figure out who to play at QB Joe Sanders or Mark Drake?
