BLEEDING BLUE AND GOLD

The annual Meet the Tigers event took place last Saturday night in the gym at Rockdale High School. (See photos at right.) This is an inclusive event that has everything but the red carpet and I’m not sure red carpet is necessary when the student athletes get to run through the Tiger tunnel.

The Big Blue Band from Tigerland was there, the Golden Girls danced, the cheerleaders cheered, all the fall sports were represented by individual Tigers and Lady Tigers and each one was introduced. All of the coaches, athletic staff, their spouses and kids were introduced as well.

We also got to meet the new high school principal Wendy Mahan. She’s from Cameron but she convinced us that she loves the blue and gold. It was a nice touch for her to be there and let us see her enthusiasm.

Hope is high and we look forward to cheering on the football team, the cross country team, the volleyball girls, watching the band march and the Golden Girls showing off at halftime.

Life is good when you are a Tiger!

—ka— Last week a thread came across my Instagram feed. The 1983 Daingerfield High School state champion football team was celebrating its 40th anniversary.

This team is widely recognized as the best high school te am to ever get on the gr idiron. This 3A team scored 631 points for an average of 39 points per game. They had three kids rush for over 1,000 yards.

While the offense was potent the defense that played 10 seniors allowed only eight points per game. They only gave up 70 yards per game, had 63 forced fumbles and had 43 sacks. The Tigers posted 14 shutouts (this was a 16 game season) and the defense scored 76 points.

The offense outscored playoff opponents 2460 and in the title game against Sweeny the defense only allowed 56 yards. Daingerfield won the game 42-0.

The Tigers went 16-0 and set too many state records to list. Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine nominated them as the No. 2 most memorable team (pro, college, high school) in Texas football history—just behind the 1969 University of Texas Longhorn national championship team.

Currently, Daingerfield plays in 10-3A DII and is picked to win district. Last year, the Tigers went 11-4, 5-1 in district and were state semi-finalists.

They are one of those dynast y schools winning state championships in football in 1968, 1983, 1985, 2008, 2009 and in 2010.

They have also excelled in other sports winning a 1977 state championship in basketball, boys golf in 1969, girls track in 1990, boys track in 1963, 1984, 1995 and 2010. From 1982 to 1985, under head coach Dennis Alexander, t he Tigers won 4 8 consecutive regular season games. From 1982 to 1989, they went 102-8-2.

In a sidenote Cameron has played Daingerfield twice for state championships. In 2010 the Tigers defeated the Yoeman 33-27 and in 2012 Cameron won against Daingerfield 38-20.
