Thorndale loses district championship, focuses energy towards Alto

THORNDALE—In what was their most anticipated game of the season, the Thorndale Bulldogs and the Hearne Eagles battled in Milam County to decide the district champion as both teams each had only one district loss going into the game.

It started off as scoreless affair, but that changed a little less than four minutes into the third quarter as Hearne’s Keyshawn Langham found Derrion Mitchell open for a 22-yard pass.

The Eagles improved their lead to 14-0 with four minutes left in the third on a 14-yard TD run from Langham.

A little more than two minutes later, Thorndale’s Coy Stutts made it 14-7 on a six-yard run and tied the game at 14 early in the fourth on a five-yard run.

It came down to the final four minutes, with Hearne’s Jabari Dunn scoring what ended up being the game-winning touchdown on a seven-yard run.

Top performers for THS were Stutts, who was 10 of 19 and had a total of 148 passing yards. Bulldog junior Clason Beasley also put up numbers for the home team, catching five of Stutts’s 10 completions for a total of 92 yards.

PLAYOFFS—W i t h the bye week coming up, Thorndale finishes the regular season with an overall record of 7-3 and a district finish of 4-2.

With two district losses, that puts THS behind Hearne and Holland for third place in District 12-2A-I.

They will face Alto in the first round of the post-season. The Yellowjackets are the runner-up from District 11-2A-I where they finished 4-1.
