It was a game of runs when Thorndale took on Schulenburg Monday evening at the Brenham High School Gymnasium.

In the first quarter, the Shorthorns led 11-2. At halftime, the Bulldogs led 25-24.

Unfortunately, Thorndale’s first round matchup with TABC’s 20th-ranked team in Class 2A came down to the final four seconds with THS down 49-47 and Chance Betak open for a corner three that he missed. Schulenburg went on to

Schulenburg went on to seal a 51-47 victory when they made two free throws with fractions of a second left in the game.

Despite the miss, Betak had 17 points, and was a leading scorer, something he’d been in every game this season for the ‘Dawgs.

Other top scorers for Thorndale were Blake Roberts with 18. Dean Johnson had five, Branson McCoy had four, Cayden Nicholson had two and Jake Ivy had two.

The maroon-and-gold were also without junior Logan Davis, a three year letterman.

For coach Michael Williams, who has finished his first as head coach of the Bulldogs, he thinks about how close they were to potentially making a run

“Looking at our side of the bracket, we could’ve made it to the regional tournament,” Williams said, “especially with Flatonia, Hearne and Port Aransas in the other half.”

“Schulenburg was the best team in our part of the bracket, and we were a shot away from beating them,” he said.

Williams is excited about the future, one that means losing one starter to graduation. He also mentioned how exciting it was to coach at a program like Thorndale where even with limited capacity in the gym for games, it was still a sensational environment to coach in.

THRALL—In order to face Schulenberg Monday, the ‘Dawgs had to take down rival Thrall in their third meeting of the season, which they did 57-42 at Milano High School on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs end their season with a record of 14-12.
