For the first time since 1997, the Texas State 7-on-7 Organization will not hold its tournament this summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The decision came days after the UIL canceled the remainder of the 2020 springs sport season.
The state 7-on-7 tournaments include an annual series of qualifying events from April through June for the state tournament in late June.
The tournament has been an important part of team development as it allows quarterbacks to play in a competitive setting during the offseason and build chemistry throughout the offense. It also helps wide receivers and defensive backs go head to head and improve their footwork, technique, timing, etc.
While many coaches have said they feel the cancellation will hurt the players, RHS Head Coach Jacob Campsey saw things from a different point of view.
“If anything, I feel that we’ll see some fresh legs since the tournament was canceled,” Campsey said. “I’m sure the guys will be throwing the ball in the offseason so I don’t think it will affect the guys too much.”
The State Tournament was scheduled for June 25-27 at Veterans Park in College Station.
