The Rockdale High Schools tennis team went into spring break on a high note with all members who competed placing in the Madisonville Tourney.
In boys singles, Tim Montelongo placed fourth in a 16-player bracket. Montelongo began the day with a bye and then taking down Jvayon Hill of Stafford in a close 8-6 match. Then he defeated Wyatt Acker of Rusk 8-6 to make it to the semi-finals.
In the semi’s, Montelongo fell to tournament runner-up Michael de Boisblanc 6-3, 6-3. In the third place match, he lost 6-1, 6-2 to Ty Hardison of Elkhart.
For the second straight week, 2018 mixed doubles state champions Devon Whitsel and Reyna Gonzalez went undefeated in tournament play and winning fi rst place.
They opened the tournament with a 8-1 victory over Maddie Campbell and Will Sharpe of Bryan’s Brazos Christian School and shutout Thad Dunn and Kathleen King of Centerville 8-0 in the second round.
In the semifinals, Gonzalez and Whitsel took down Johnathan Ellard and Neva Cravens of Caldwell 6-1, 6-1 and won the tournament with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Alex Shiller and Camryn Lupo of Palestine.
In the girls doubles division, Bianca Zapata and Stephanie Ceja teamed up for the second week in a row.
The duo got a bye in the first round but lost 8-4 in the second round to Ana Lima and Taylor Morgan of Centerville.
Moving to the consolation bracket, Zapata and Ceja won their opening match 8-2 over Hannah Bernard and Katie Howell of Elkhart.
They won the finals due to a forfeit by Kylie Franklin and Jaysa Coney of Palestine Westwood, winning fifth place.
The 2018 regional qualifiers Eve King and Payton Miller didn’t play that day due to Miller having a softball game in Lexington that evening.
Autumn Montelongo, who usually partners up with Ceja in the girls doubles division also had a district softball game later that day in Lexington 99 miles away from Madisonville.
The Rockdale tennis teams don’t have another tournament scheduled until Friday, March 29, in Liberty Hill.
The District 19-3A tournament is scheduled for Tuesday, April 2, and Thursday, April 4, in Franklin.
