The Rockdale Junior High eighth grade A team fought to beat the Jarrell Cougars 32-20 after being down 13-0 in the first quarter.
The Tigers chipped away at the Cougar lead when Robert Owens scored on a 15-yard touchdown run before the end of the quarter.
The team gained momentum for the rest of the game when the Tigers went ahead before the end of the half, said Coach Eric Willard. First, Rock-dale scored on a 40-yard pass from Owens to Scott Penny. Owens then scored his second touchdown of the game on a five yard run, putting the Tigers up 18-13.
In the third quarter, Penny scored his second touchdown of the game when Owens found him on a 45-yard pass. With a Cougar touchdown, the quarter ended 24-20. The Rockdale defense was able to shut down any potential playmakers for Jarrell when Lane Bell and Joel Scott got a safety to put the Tigers up 26-20. The blue and gold clinched the game on the next drive when Owens scored on a 20-yard run.
Defensive standouts were Scott, Cade Pantaleon, and Tyler Stewart. Offensive standouts were Jose Aboytes, Lane Rick-man, and Ashton McEntaffer.
7A—The seventh grade A team got their fourth win of the 2018 season, defeating Jarrell 37-12.
On the opening drive, Wyatt Windham scored on a five-yard pass from Blaydn Barcak to put the Tigers up 6-0. Barcak made an interception on the next series, which led to his first touchdown of the game with a 20-yard run. Mason Willard kicked the PAT (point-after-touchdown) to put Rock-dale up 14-0. In junior high, a kicked PAT counts for two points.
The Cougars scored in the second quarter to make it 14-6 at the half. In the opening seconds of the third quarter, Kemar Spencer returned a kickoff for an 80-yard touchdown. Willard’s PAT was blocked, but Cruz San Migel recovered the ball and scored to make it 21-6.
Rockdale got the ball back when Willard returned an interception for a 30-yard touchdown. He also kicked the PAT to give the squad a 29-6 lead.
The Tigers scored once more in the fourth quarter on a five-yard touchdown run by Isaiah Sauls. Willard made his third PAT of the game to put them ahead of Jarrell 37-6. The Cougars scored again, but a Lorenzo Rivera interception gave the Tigers the ball back to clinch a 37-12 victory.
Defensive standouts were San Migel, Sterling Prazak, and Nick Flores. Offensive standouts Madden Montelongo, Noah Pastrano, and Zach Montelongo.
The Rockdale Junior High football teams play their final games of the 2018 season on Thursday when they head to Little River-Academy to take on the Bumblebees.
8B/7B COMBINED—The combined B team got off to a fast start when Daniel Romero’s onside kick was recovered by Chris Perez, giving Rockdale the ball with good field position. Quarterback Jonathan Sperry made a 40-yard pass to Dominique Clark. This led to Sperry scoring on a one-yard touchdown run, going up 6-0.
Jarrell took the lead in the second quarter when they completed their extra point-conversion to go up 7-6. After going into halftime winning, the Cougars extended their lead to 14-6 in the third quarter.
The Tigers had chances, making it down the field with 20-yard runs by Kayden Land and Cayden Young, but Jarrell prevented Rockdale from scoring at won the game 14-6.
Defensive standouts were Ryan Cranford, Saint Medrano, and Land. Offensive standouts were Daniel Gardiner, Tyler Thomas, and Perez.
