This Saturday, Rock-dale sophomore I vanna Luna and Thorndale senior Mason Drumm will both have the opportunity to compete for a gold medal at the UI L Cross Country State championships at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.
“I t’s been great,” said Cheryl Meuth, Rockdale High School head cross country coach. “She’s so zoned into the state race and it’s showing in her workouts.”
To help her get ready for the big race, Meuth has Luna training with RJ H eighth grader J esus Bocanegra, a 2019 district champion who only lost one race this entire season and had the fifth fast0 est time for eighth graders in the state of Texas during this season.
“I ’ve had J esus pacing her during practices to give her something to chase after,” Meuth, who is in her third year as Rockdale’s head cross country coach, said. “They work really well together.”
Luna made it to the state race after finishinj fourth at the district meet in Cameron on Monday, Oct. 13, and placing seventh at the regional meet in Huntsville on Monday, Oct. 27.
Prior to the district and regional meets, the RHS sophomore had second place finishes at the Lexington Small School Showdown and the Caldwell I nvitational as well as a third place finish at the Cameron meet a week and a half before they went back across the Little River for the district meet.
“We can’t wait to have this experience,” Meuth said. “She’s earned it.”
Luna’s race begins at 10:50 a.m.
DRUMM–Thorndale senior Mason Drumm will run right before Luna’s race at 10:10 a.m., on Saturday.
Drumm was the District 25-2A champion and placed 14th at the Region I V meet in Corpus Christi last week. He was counted as eighth due to six of the runners in front of him being attached to one of the top three teams at the meet.
The Thorndale senior also had a stellar pre-district campaign.
He won the Lexington meet, finished third at Moody and like Luna, also placed third at the Cameron meet before district.
Drumm also placed 12th out of 121 runners at a Temple meet in August.
